Cross vs Isolated Margin on Polymarket Perps: Which Protects You Better?

Ais Fang· perps · Updated October 2026

Margin mode is a risk-partition decision, not a preference toggle. Isolated walls each position behind its own collateral — a liquidation takes only that position. Cross pools collateral across positions — unrealized gains cushion unrealized losses, but a liquidation can unwind the entire cross account. Polymarket Perps supports both, with a default that matters: the web app opens positions isolated, and cross is opt-in through the API (and only for instruments that allow it).

What is the difference between cross and isolated margin?

Isolated: each position carries a dedicated margin allocation. Liquidation closes only the affected position; your other positions and remaining balance are untouched. Failure is contained by construction.

Cross: account collateral is shared across all cross positions. Unrealized profit on one position offsets margin strain on another — the portfolio breathes as one. But the engine evaluates (and can liquidate) the whole cross account: correlated positions falling together fall faster in cross mode, because shared collateral is shared exposure.

When isolated wins

Hedged or uncorrelated positions. A long perp and a NO position on the related event have separate risk stories — isolate them, so one blowup can’t touch the other.

Testing a new strategy. New signal, unfamiliar instrument: isolate it so its worst case is its allocated margin, nothing more — see the sizing playbook.

High-conviction asymmetric bets. If your thesis has a defined “wrong” point, isolate exactly the capital you’re willing to lose at that point — this pairs naturally with liquidation-distance math.

When you sleep. Isolated is the mode where a black-swan overnight move costs a position, not an account.

When cross wins

Correlated offsetting exposure. Legitimate spreads — long one instrument, short a correlated one — where losses on one leg are structurally gains on the other: cross margin recognizes the offset and frees the double-collateral that isolated would demand.

Capital efficiency at scale. Running multiple modest positions in one direction with a shared buffer: cross requires less total collateral for the same net exposure.

Active management. If you monitor positions continuously and can react, cross’s efficiency is worth its coupling. If you can’t monitor, coupling is the risk — see why orders get rejected for how cross changes the worst-case check’s arithmetic.

The web-app default and the API reality

The web app opens everything isolated — which quietly protects most retail users. Cross requires opting in through the API via leverage configuration, and instrument data shows which margin modes each market supports: some are isolated-only and reject cross. Bot operators choosing cross should read the leverage tiers interaction: tier bands apply per position, and cross changes how collateral backs them, not the tiers themselves.

FAQ

What is cross margin on Polymarket Perps? A mode where all cross positions share account collateral — unrealized PnL on one offsets margin strain on another, and the engine can liquidate the whole cross account. Opt-in via API, only on instruments that allow it.

Which margin mode is safer for beginners? Isolated — it’s the web-app default for good reason: a liquidation takes one position, not the account. Cross couples everything you trade; beginners shouldn’t couple what they can’t yet hedge.

Can I switch a position from isolated to cross? Margin mode is set at position open (cross via API leverage configuration). Plan the mode per position at entry; the margin modes guide covers the workflow.

Why do professional spreads use cross margin? Offsetting legs guarantee opposite PnL — isolated margin would demand full collateral on each leg, doubling capital for one economic bet. Cross recognizes the hedge; see arbitrage mechanics for the cross-venue version.

Does cross margin prevent liquidation? It delays and cushions it (shared buffer, offsetting PnL), but a large correlated move against all cross positions liquidates the account faster than isolated positions would have failed individually. The trade-off is coupling, not immunity — see liquidation mechanics.
