How Do I Paper Trade on Polymarket? Test Strategies With Zero Risk (2026)

Ahmed Trading· sdk · Updated October 2026

Paper trading done honestly is the cheapest edge-validation that exists. Done lazily, it’s a fantasy ledger that proves nothing. The difference is the cost model and the fill simulator: a paper trade at the mid price is a lie; a paper trade at your size’s VWAP through the real book is information. Here’s the setup that transfers to live money.

How do you paper trade on Polymarket?

Build a simulation harness against live data — three tiers of honesty. Tier 1 (signal-only): record signals and the price at signal time; settle against actual outcomes later. Validates the signal, says nothing about execution. Tier 2 (book-aware): at signal time, simulate the fill — walk the live book for your size (the VWAP method), add spread crossing and fees, track the position through time. Tier 3 (full-dress): run the actual bot code with a paper-execution adapter — every component real except the wallet. Tier 3 catches bugs tier 2 can’t see (see the 8 components): the websocket layer, the risk gates, the settlement sweep.

The cost model that makes paper results honest

Every simulated fill pays: spread (you cross it — both ways on round trips), slippage (your size walks the book; compute it per fill, not as an average), fees (taker/maker per the current schedule), and for perps funding (integrate the actual funding history over your simulated hold — see funding mechanics). Then the honesty test: re-run the same simulation at 1.5× costs. If the edge dies, it was never an edge — the backtesting guide applies the same sensitivity logic to historical tests.

What paper trading can’t teach you

Your own behavior. Panic, tilt, and revenge-sizing don’t exist in a simulation — the psychological gap between paper and live is the reason tier-3 paper runs graduate to minimum live size before real size (see position-sizing discipline). Adverse selection. Your simulated maker fills assume you’d have gotten them; live, the fills you get are the ones the market moved against (see maker strategy). Liquidity timing. Books at 3 a.m. and books at event-night are different venues; paper runs spanning both are worth double.

The discipline that transfers paper to live

  1. Log everything as if it were real — fills, rejections, funding, the works. Paper PnL without attribution is a vibe.
  2. Same risk limits. If live-you runs 2% risk per trade, paper-you does too — simulating unlimited risk validates nothing.
  3. A fixed graduation gate. Paper edge survives 2+ weeks and the 1.5× cost test → minimum live size → scale only on live results. No gate means no graduation ever happens honestly — see the deployment checklist.
  4. Reconcile with reality. Compare your simulated fills to what the book actually did next: systematic divergence = simulator bug, and every bug found in paper is free.

FAQ

Can you paper trade on Polymarket? Yes — build a simulation harness against live market data (three tiers above). There’s no official paper mode, so the harness is your own code or a framework; tier-3 (bot code with a paper wallet adapter) is the one worth running before live money.

How long should I paper trade before going live? Two weeks minimum for event-market signals; a full cycle for perps carry (so funding sign-flips appear in your sample). Then minimum live size — behavior risk only shows with real money at stake.

How do I simulate fills honestly? Walk the live book at your size for VWAP, add spread crossing, fees, and (for perps) actual funding history over the hold — never fill at mid. The cost-model section above has the full stack.

Why does my paper trading profit but live trading lose? The gap is: costs your simulator ignored, fills you couldn’t have gotten (adverse selection on maker fills), and your own behavior under real risk. The graduation-gate discipline exists to find this gap cheaply.

Does paper trading count for backtesting? It’s the forward test that complements backtesting — backtests validate against history, paper validates against now including live books and your code. Both, honestly done, before real size: see the honest methods.
